GUEST SPEAKER PRESENTATIONS

I LOVE SPEAKING TO FLY FISHING CLUBS AND FLY FISHING SHOWS.

TEACHING STILLWATER FLY FISHING TACTICS IS MY PASSION!

I DO GUEST SPEAKER PRESENTATIONS TO FLY FISHING CLUBS, FLY FISHING SHOWS, FLY FISHING FAIRS AND FLY FISHING SHOPS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO EVERY FLY FISHING CLUB IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, SOME TWO OR THREE TIMES. I HAVE ALSO SPOKEN TO MANY NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CLUBS AND NEVADA FLY FISHING CLUBS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ANY REFERENCES YOU MAY CONTACT ANY OF THE CLUBS I HAVE LISTED BELOW FOR MY REFERENCES. MY SPEAKING FEE IS $350.00 PLUS MY FUEL AND EXPENSES. BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN A PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF A FLY FISHING CLUB I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO GET GOOD QUALITY SPEAKERS AT A VERY GOOD PRICE. I WILL WORK WITH EACH CLUB TO SEE HOW I CAN HELP YOU SAVE MONEY ON MY TRAVEL FEES. MY FIRST THOUGHT IS TO TRY TO GET MORE THAN ONE CLUB IN YOUR AREA ON THE SAME WEEK SO I CAN SPEAK TO ALL CLUBS AND DIVIDE THE FEES BETWEEN ALL CLUBS INSTEAD OF JUST ONE CLUB PAYING FOR THE WHOLE FEE. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CLUB SPEAKING IN THE SAME WEEK OR CLOSE TOGETHER, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL TRY TO WORK OUT A SMALLER FEE FOR EACH CLUB ON MY EXPENSES.

"WHAT DO TROUT EAT"

One of the most important questions that anglers ask themselves and try to answer every time he or she ventures onto the water is, “What are the trout eating this very minute?” This can be a tough question because trout often have many different food items from which to choose. In fertile waters, the choices are almost limitless. Chironomids, scuds, fry, leeches, damsels, snails and mayflies are just a few of the tasty morsels trout love to eat. And each food item has different stages in its life cycle that it can be going through, e.g., egg, larva, pupa, adult or fry. How and when do we first observe and then conduct quick and reliable research in order to choose the correct fly or flies that imitate what the trout are eating at that moment? We will become familiar with many of these life cycles, the time of year they are most prominent and which food items trout in our waters love to key on most of the time. And we’ll learn the importance of understanding how these food items actually move in the water. Most individual food items move in different ways through the water column and this is often a key when trying to mimic how to fish your fly and make it look just like the real food the trout are seeking. We will even see short videos of many of the food items that will show how they move.

CROWLEY LAKE FLY FISHING TACTICS

“Crowley Lake Fishing Tactics” The name Crowley Lake speaks for itself. For the last couple of decades this stillwater has consistently been one of the best stillwater fisheries in the West. The fish are getting bigger with larger numbers every year! A lake that has revolutionized the way we look at indicator fishing for trout. I cover the best places to fish on the lake depending on the months you are fishing by showing a map of the lake. The migrating patterns of the fish from opening day to the closer. How to get to the fish using water craft, boats, tubes, pontoons etc. and how to fish out of each one effectively. How to anchor your craft and make a solid platform to fish from. This is the most important rule to learn when indicator fishing. Once you find the fish how to attack them by using three simple rules that will make you better than 90% of the fisherman on the lake. Many, many pictures of my fly patterns that have worked over the years and today! Leader setups for both regular indicator fishing and deepwater indicator fishing as deep as 25 feet of water. Also just because you are indicator fishing doesn’t mean you have to always fish a midge. We fish perch patterns, leach patterns, damsel nymph patterns and stillwater worms under an indicator very successfully. I will also talk about stripping/retrieving tactics and how to set up your leader systems to fish perch, damsel and leach patterns on sinking and intermediate lines. Not only do these tactics work well at Crowley but can be taken anywhere in the world that has stillwaters and good midge and fry populations and will successfully and consistently catch trout. Also eye candy of some very large fish that my clients and I have caught and released this year and last!

FLY FISHING PYRAMID LAKE, NEVADA

“Fly Fishing Lake Pyramid, NV” I start the presentation with some history of the lake, statistics and more specific history of the fish in the lake. Move forward with how the Paiute indians have done such a fantastic job in recreating this fishery and sustaining the great fishing we have there year after year. I talk about the new break thru in finding the Pilot Peak Strain of Cutthroat that was the original Lahanton that was completely wiped out to the lake in the 40’s and now has been brought back by the Lahanton National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville, Nevada. I cover the weather that you will encounter at this lake which can be very brutal most of the time. I cover the best places to fish on the lake breaking it down from month to month movements of the fish. How and where to find them and how to attack these fish by fishing from ladders. I bring in a custom ladder that I fish from and also a simple ladder you can buy from any home depot and customize it to show you how to make it a better fly fishing platform. I cover tactics on shooting head applications to reach the fish and also cover indicator fishing tactics that has just taken off the last few years. I break down leader set ups that we have used over the years and the flies we use. I cover ladder tactics and how to land fish from your ladder and how to set up your ladder before and after you get into the water. I cover the specific rods we use and what weights and lengths of rods will better fit you for shooting head and indicator fishing applications. Oh course along the way there are plenty of BIG FISH pictures with fish up to 20+lbs. (fish are now consistantly being caught this year in the 20 to 25 pound class) and are getting bigger as we speak. I like to call them fish porn if I may! In my humble opinion Lake Pyramid is one of the best opportunities to catch a trout up to 25+lbs and over in the Western United States in a stillwater while casting a fly.

TROPHY STILLWATER OF THE EASTERN SIERRA

Let me take you on a grand tour of three of the best trophy trout fisheries we have in the Eastern Sierra. We will cover Kirman Lake, the Best Brook Trout fishery in California. We will cover Heenan Lake which is a brood stock lake for the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. Finally Crowley Lake which in my humble opinion is the best and possibly the most perfect stillwater we have for trout. I will cover history of each individual lake including elevations, size, depth, when lake was started and seasons and regulations. I will break down and discuss bugs, food items and what the best flies to use to be successful at each stillwater. Leader systems, water craft and specific rods to give you the best advantage possible on each body of water.

CHIRONOMIDS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

Let me share my philosophy and tactics that I have learned from putting thousands of hours on the water fishing chironomids at one of the toughest and most technical stillwaters we have in the West! I will show you all of my leader setups, type of fly rods and reels, fly patterns, the chironomid life cycle and how to make sure you are always putting your fly at the proper depths for success. Depth, color and size of bugs in that order are the most important aspect of learning how to fish chironomids. Let me show you all of my secrets of success.
